gamification – puzzles in gaming (half life 2)

“Puzzles are really useful devices for getting players to calm down after an exciting part of the game and focus on the detail of the world around them. We build all this detail into the world and in many cases the player whizzes through it at a breakneck pace. Puzzles and ‘down time’ are like a sorbet in a multi-course meal, in that they allow the player to better appreciate whatever action comes next. Without these pacing contrasts, everything becomes a numbing blur of relentless action, which winds up being fatiguing and not very fun after a while.” – Josh Weier
